Lyrics
Always flying, always on the go
3:30 in the morning, just getting home
I knew his voice ‘cause my Daddy he was on the radio
I missed him so
And he’d say “I know it’s hard, but believe me boy, I’ve got no other choice
You understand, don’t you
You understand, don’t you
You understand”
He’s always calling, but he never talks for long
He sounds so quiet given he’s so big and strong
He says “everything’s okay” but it feels like something’s wrong
Still I play his song
And he says “I know it’s hard, but believe me boy, I’ve got no other choice
You understand, don’t you
You understand, don’t you
You understand”
So I keep playing his song and waiting by the phone
Trying to be his little man of the house ’til the day that he comes home and says
“I’m always flying, son, I’m always on the go
And I know that it hasn’t been easy here at home
I guess you could say someone new needs me now on the road
It doesn’t mean I love you any less”, and then he says
“You’ll understand when you’re grown”
I look at the floor and hope that I don’t, and he says
“Will you still listen to me on the radio?”
I look up and tell him “No.
But you understand don’t you.
You understand, don’t you. You understand.”
